History of the library

Hadiach Public Library named after Lesya Ukrainka is one of the oldest book collections in Ukraine. This is evidenced by archival documents, prints of famous authoritative people on the pages of contemporary periodicals, their correspondence. Not every library can boast of such a rich and glorious biography. The initiator of the establishment of the public library in Gadyach was Mikhail Petrovich Drahomanov - our compatriot, active public and political figure, philosopher and  historian, publicist and literary critic, folklorist, ethnographer, man of European education, encyclopedic knowledge and broad democratic views. Even during his first visit from Kyiv University, the young, energetic Mykhailo Drahomanov talks about opening a public library in his native Gadyach. This noble idea was supported by local enthusiasts  writer Ivan Bilyk (I.Ya. Rudchenko), brother of Panas Myrny, and poet, ethnographer, educator Semyon Metlinsky (literary pseudonym Semyon Rodina) from Sar. M. Drahomanov's ideas were actively implemented by his friends and like-minded people. "He also found new friends who helped him with that," Olena Pchilka recalled.

So in 1861 a public library was founded in Gadyach. She was in the private apartment of one of its founders, Dr. Chernysh. He also performed the functions of a librarian. The first books, among which were works by M. Gogol, O. Pushkin, T. Shevchenko, were purchased with funds raised from amateur performances and concerts. Periodicals were also received  "Russian Herald", "Contemporary", "Patriotic Notes", "Herald of Europe" and others.

Replenished  book fund and at the expense of donations of honorary members of the library  Sofia Pivovarova, Petro Ivashchenko, brothers Alexei and Pavel Fedorovich, Grigory Volyansky, Pavel Stoyanov and others. Use of the library was paid  (3 rubles per year), so readers (subscribers) were mostly wealthy people.

The list of readers for 1887 also includes Elizaveta Ivanivna Drahomanova, Lesya Ukrainka's grandmother, and Lesya herself visited the library.

A lot of interesting information on the history of the library, its activities can be found in the "Report" for 1888, compiled by librarian MO Nemirov.  For the second century, this priceless historical relic has been carefully preserved  library staff.

The Report provides an analysis of the number of readers (subscribers) for the period from March 1883 to January 1888. 1983 was a time of fascination with the library business  "The novelty of the case fooled, intoxicated the audience  even those who did not feel any need to read signed; in short, the library business has become fashionable. "

In 1886, the first Charter of the library was approved - the "Charter of the Gadyach Public Assembly".

An inexhaustible source of new important, interesting information on the history of our library are the prints of our compatriots  Galina Deina - a well-known, authoritative researcher and popularizer of the creative heritage of the Drahomanov family; literary explorations of true patriots of the native land Hryhoriy Shanko and Anatoliy Shestopal, research of the tireless literary critic Petro Boyko.

On the eve of the revolution of 1917. Gadyatska's book collection served about 200 readers, the book fund numbered 8000 copies.

In 1918, a county library was established, taken over by the state and  a special room is allocated.  From 1918 to 1941 the book fund reached 45 thousand copies, and the number of readers increased to 2 thousand. The name of one of the first heads of the library is known - from the early 30's  until 1939 - Peter Zakharovich Tkachenko.

During the occupation of Gadyach, the Nazis used the library premises as a stable, and the books were thrown out into the yard. Almost 12,000 copies of books were destroyed. Only thanks  library staff and residents of the city managed to save part of the book fund. At night, risking his life, librarian MI Ruban transported books in a cart to an 8-year-old school in the Zayar district.

From the first days of liberation, the Snake Library began to operate. From September 1943 to 1946 it was headed by Mykola Ivanovych Ruban, and from 1946 to 1970 by Georgy Zinoviyovych Tulyupa, a participant in the war.

In 1948, the library was named after Lesya Ukrainka, a corner of the genius poetess was created, which collects material about her life and work, stay in our city.

For more efficient customer service in 1978, the district libraries were centralized. Director  Gadyatskaya CBS is appointed  Ragulin Volodymyr Vasyliovych, who held this position until 1987.

Lydia Oleksiivna Nazymko headed the library system of the district for 25 years.

Today, the Lesia Ukrainka Central Library in Hadiach is an informational, educational, cultural and educational, educational, and leisure institution. She serves  4700 users, publishes more than 94 thousand copies of printed works, subscribes to about 90 titles of periodicals.
